Why value proposition matters to a first-time founder
Every later decision leans on this promise: who you target, what you build first, how you price and what your landing page says. Without it, founders add features to win anyone and end up with a product nobody chooses strongly. A sharp value proposition also makes rejection useful, because when a prospect says no you can tell whether the problem, the alternative or the price failed.
Examples of value proposition
“Freelance designers get overdue invoices chased for them, without taking on accounting software, for less than an hour of their own rate.” That value proposition names who it is for, what changes, and why it is worth paying.
Common misunderstanding
People mix it up with an elevator pitch or a slogan. The value proposition is the promise. The pitch is how you say that promise out loud. A slogan is a line for a poster.
When to use it
Write the value proposition before you set a price, brief a designer, or describe the product to anyone outside the team. If a customer cannot say the promise back to you, it is not clear yet.
