Taxes

“Compulsory charges imposed by public authorities under law on income, profits, transactions, property or other tax bases.”

Why taxes matter to a first-time founder

Taxes affect nearly every business model through profit, payroll, sales, imports or property. Founders should separate money collected for authorities from revenue and reserve cash for amounts due. Early compliance work is usually cheaper than correcting missing registrations or filings later.

Examples of taxes

A retailer charges customers a consumption tax, withholds payroll taxes from employees and pays tax on company profits. These are separate obligations with different bases and deadlines. The business records each amount and does not treat customer tax collected as its own income.

Common misunderstanding

Taxes are not one combined bill, and not every government charge is legally a tax. Fees, duties, levies and social contributions may follow distinct rules. The party paying cash to an authority may also differ from the person who ultimately bears the economic cost.

When to use it

Use the plural for several compulsory charges, but name each tax when calculating, contracting or filing. Map obligations by entity, activity and jurisdiction, then track registration, returns and payments. Local rules and treaties can change which authority has taxing rights.
