Tax table

“A published schedule used to find tax or withholding amounts for specified income ranges and circumstances.”

Why tax table matters to a first-time founder

Payroll and tax calculations may depend on official tables rather than one simple percentage. Using the correct version helps a founder withhold and budget accurately. Tables can vary by pay frequency, filing status, allowances, region and tax year.

Examples of tax table

An employer uses the current monthly withholding table to calculate income tax deducted from an employee’s pay. It selects the row for taxable pay and the relevant employee category. Payroll software should implement the same current authority rules.

Common misunderstanding

A tax table is not necessarily a complete statement of the law or the final tax calculation. It may cover withholding only, exclude credits or apply to a limited income range. Old tables can produce wrong deductions even if the method is unchanged.

When to use it

Use it when an authority instructs taxpayers or employers to look up an amount from a schedule. Confirm the jurisdiction, tax year, frequency and taxpayer category. Keep payroll software and manual references updated whenever the authority publishes a replacement.
