Tax season

“An informal period when many taxpayers prepare and file annual returns before a common deadline.”

Why tax season matters to a first-time founder

The phrase is common in consumer tax discussions, but a business usually has obligations throughout the year. Founders who wait for an annual rush may miss payroll, consumption tax, instalment or company deadlines. A live compliance calendar is more useful than one seasonal reminder.

Examples of tax season in practice

Individuals in a country may file annual income tax returns during the same few months, creating a recognised tax season. A start-up operating there still files payroll reports monthly and consumption tax returns quarterly, so its work continues outside that period.

Common misunderstanding

Tax season is not a universal legal period. Dates differ by country, taxpayer, tax and accounting year, and extensions may change filing without changing payment. Businesses should not assume a deadline mentioned in general media applies to their own entity.

When to use it

Use it informally when discussing a jurisdiction’s main annual filing period. For planning or instructions, replace it with exact return and payment dates for each obligation. Confirm dates with the relevant authority and account for weekends, extensions and local time zones.
