Tax rate

“The percentage or other measure used to calculate tax on a defined tax base.”

Why tax rate matters to a first-time founder

Rates feed directly into pricing, payroll, cash reserves and financial forecasts. Founders should distinguish the published headline rate from the effective rate after deductions, credits and different bands. The relevant rate may also depend on location, activity, turnover or legal form.

Examples of tax rate

A company faces a 20% corporation tax rate but has deductions and credits that reduce tax on ₹10 million of accounting profit to ₹1.6 million. Its statutory rate is 20%, while its effective rate in this simplified example is 16%.

Common misunderstanding

A tax rate does not by itself reveal the final amount due. The tax base, thresholds, exemptions, bands, surcharges and credits matter too. Marginal rates apply to an additional slice of income, not necessarily to all income earned.

When to use it

Use it when calculating a named tax or comparing scenarios. State whether the rate is statutory, marginal, average or effective, along with the jurisdiction, period and tax base. Check current official sources because rates and thresholds can change.
