Why tax liability matters to a first-time founder
Founders need to reserve enough cash for taxes arising from profits, payroll, sales and transactions. A liability can exist before payment is due, so the bank balance may overstate spendable cash. Regular estimates reduce the risk of missed deadlines and emergency borrowing.
Examples of tax liability
A company calculates ₦12 million of corporation tax for its financial year and records that amount as a liability until payment. It may also hold separate liabilities for payroll deductions and VAT. Each amount follows its own calculation and deadline under local rules.
Common misunderstanding
Tax liability is not limited to the figure on an income tax return. Different taxes can create separate obligations, and the accounting balance may differ from the current cash payment. Credits, instalments, disputes and deferred tax can affect what appears in each measure.
When to use it
Use it when estimating tax, recording an amount owed or discussing an assessed obligation. Name the taxpayer, tax, period and jurisdiction. Reconcile the figure to filings and payment schedules, and obtain local advice where the treatment or amount is uncertain.
