Serviceable obtainable market (SOM)

“The share of your serviceable market you can realistically win in the near term, given your sales capacity, budget and competition. Serviceable obtainable market (SOM) is the figure to plan and hire against.”

Why serviceable obtainable market (SOM) matters to a first-time founder

Your obtainable market is the number you will be held to. Investors compare it with your sales capacity, pricing and marketing budget, and a figure with no path behind it costs credibility. A grounded estimate tells you how many customers you need to win, how many people that takes and whether the next twelve to twenty-four months of plans add up.

Examples of serviceable obtainable market (SOM)

Of the UK freelance designers you can reach, you might win 500 in the next year, at £240 each, which is £120,000. That is a plan you can hire and market against. It is not 1% of a £48 million ceiling, chosen because 1% sounded modest.

Common misunderstanding

People calculate it as a token percentage of a huge market so the slide looks sane. A percentage with no path is still a wish. Obtainable means you can say how those customers hear about you and why they would switch this year.

When to use it

Use it for the plan and the target, and keep the larger numbers for the question of whether the market is big enough. If the obtainable figure needs a miracle channel you do not have, it is not obtainable.
