Why service sector matters to a first-time founder
Service businesses usually sell expertise, access or labour rather than physical products. That changes how you plan capacity, quality and margins: unused appointment time cannot be stored for later. Founders should track staff utilisation and customer experience alongside revenue.
Examples of service sector
A design studio charges ¥500,000 for a four-week project. Freelancers cost ¥200,000 and software costs ¥20,000, leaving ¥280,000 before rent, sales and tax. If two designers sit idle for a month, that unused capacity cannot be sold retrospectively.
Common misunderstanding
Services are not necessarily small, local or low-technology businesses. Banks, cloud platforms, hospitals and logistics networks all operate mainly in the service sector. A company can also combine sectors, such as selling equipment while charging separately for installation and support.
When to use it
Use the label when comparing industries, researching market data or explaining what customers buy from you. For day-to-day planning, use a more precise model such as consultancy, subscription or marketplace, because each has different staffing, pricing and regulatory needs.
