Why second quarter (Q2) matters to a first-time founder
Q2 provides a useful midpoint view for calendar-year plans and often reveals whether Q1 trends are continuing. Founders can adjust hiring, spending or sales activity before much of the year has passed, provided they use the company’s actual financial calendar.
Examples of second quarter (Q2)
A calendar-year agency planned ₦300 million of revenue by 30 June. It reports ₦275 million after Q2, while payroll is on budget. The ₦25 million gap prompts a review of delayed projects and collections rather than an immediate cost cut based on revenue alone.
Common misunderstanding
Q2 is the second three-month period in a financial year, not always April to June. A business beginning its year in October has Q2 from January through March. Half-year totals usually combine Q1 and Q2, but Q2 alone contains only the second quarter.
When to use it
Use Q2 for board reports, forecasts and mid-year course corrections. Include exact dates and compare like with like, especially after changing year-end or accounting policies. If the business is strongly seasonal, add the same quarter from the previous year before drawing conclusions.
