Sales pipeline

“The potential customers a company is in conversation with, arranged by how close each one is to buying.”

Why sales pipeline matters to a first-time founder

A pipeline is how you forecast revenue before it arrives. Without one, you hire, spend and promise investors numbers based on how busy you feel rather than on deals with a real next step. Sorting conversations by stage shows where deals stall, which stage needs work and how much money is realistically coming in next quarter. It also stops a few warm chats from looking like a business.

Examples of sales pipeline

Twelve studios have replied. Five have had a call. Two have a start date and a price. The two are close. The five are in the middle. The twelve includes people who only said “interesting”. If you report all twelve as likely revenue, you will hire against money that is not coming.

Common misunderstanding

People confuse it with a list of leads, or they keep dead conversations in the late stage because moving them back feels like failure. A lead has shown interest. The pipeline is those leads sorted by the next step. A deal with no next step is not progressing. It is waiting for you to admit it stopped.

When to use it

Use it once more than a handful of people are in real conversations, especially if a company rather than a person is buying. Review it for the next step, not for the comfort of a long list.
