Retail sales

“Sales of goods or services directly to the people who will use them, rather than to another reseller.”

Why retail sales matter to a first-time founder

Retail sales show demand from end customers and help a founder plan stock, staffing and cash. The headline number can still hide returns, discounts, tax and weak margins. Comparing like-for-like periods and channels is more useful than celebrating growth caused only by opening another shop or raising prices.

Examples of retail sales

An online skincare brand records ₹6 million of customer orders in June. Customers return ₹400,000 of goods, and the figure includes ₹900,000 of sales tax collected for the government. The founder separates gross orders, returns, tax and net sales before comparing June with May.

Common misunderstanding

Retail sales are not the same as cash received or profit. A card processor may pay later, and the sale may carry product, delivery and marketing costs. Sales to a wholesaler are also not retail sales by the producer, even if the wholesaler later sells those goods to consumers.

When to use it

Track retail sales by period, channel and product when ordering stock, scheduling staff or testing promotions. Keep definitions consistent and show returns, discounts and taxes separately. If using national retail-sales statistics, check which sectors, price effects and online transactions the published measure includes.
