Why recurring billing matters to a first-time founder
Automating repeat charges can make revenue and cash collection more predictable, but failures, refunds and cancellations still need active management. Clear consent and renewal terms protect customer trust. Founders should also reconcile processor records with invoices and bank receipts.
Examples of recurring billing
A design platform charges ₦24,000 monthly after a 14-day trial. Before the first charge it displays the renewal date and cancellation method. Each month it issues an invoice, retries failed payments under a stated policy and stops billing promptly after cancellation.
Common misunderstanding
Recurring billing is not permission to charge indefinitely. The customer’s agreement, applicable consumer rules and card-network requirements govern consent, notices and cancellation. It also differs from recurring revenue: contracted or expected revenue can exist even when invoices are raised manually.
When to use it
Use it for subscriptions, retainers, memberships or maintenance plans with repeat payment obligations. Record consent, price, frequency, taxes, renewal and cancellation terms. Check local consumer, payments and data-protection rules, especially for free trials and automatic renewals.
