Why promotion matters to a first-time founder
Good promotion helps the right customers discover, understand and act on an offer. Poor promotion wastes cash or attracts people the product cannot serve. Founders also carry responsibility for truthful claims, clear conditions and respectful targeting, especially when audiences may be vulnerable or incentives could distort decisions.
Examples of promotion
A meal-planning startup spends ₹200,000 promoting a new annual plan through email and search adverts. It offers 20% off until Friday, states the renewal price beside the offer and tracks 80 paid sign-ups. The ₹2,500 customer acquisition cost is then compared with expected customer value and refund rates.
Common misunderstanding
Promotion is one part of marketing, not a synonym for the whole discipline. Marketing also covers research, positioning, product, pricing and distribution. A discount is only one promotional tool; useful content, demonstrations, public relations and personal selling can increase awareness without reducing the price.
When to use it
Use promotion when a defined audience, message, offer, channel and measurable action support a business goal. Test a small campaign before scaling it, and review conversion quality rather than reach alone. Avoid urgency, testimonials or targeting that misleads people, and follow advertising, privacy and consumer-protection rules.
