Why product-led growth matters to a first-time founder
Product-led growth decides how you spend your first year: on making the product easy to start and quick to prove its value, or on sales calls and demos. If it fits your customers, each new user can cost far less to win and may bring colleagues in. If it does not fit, because buyers need approvals, integration or training, chasing self-service sign-ups wastes runway while the real buyers wait for a conversation.
Examples of product-led growth
A freelancer lands on the page, starts a trial, sends one chase email, and pays, without you on a call. The email they sent is the moment they felt it. If every customer needs you to set the account up by hand, you do not have this motion. You have a service with a signup form.
Common misunderstanding
People use the phrase for any software business, or they think it means you never talk to customers. Self-service trials and freemium are common tools, not requirements. Sales can support larger accounts while the product still drives adoption and expansion. You still do discovery and help customers who get stuck.
When to use it
Choose it when customers can experience meaningful product value early and that use can drive continued adoption. If a larger buyer needs several colleagues to agree, plan a sales conversation without pretending that sales assistance cancels the product-led motion.
