Why price sensitivity matters to a first-time founder
Knowing how customers react to price helps a founder choose packages, discounts and sales messages. Highly sensitive buyers may switch for a small saving, while others value convenience or reliability more. Treating every customer alike can either leave money behind or damage conversion.
Examples of price sensitivity
A founder tests a monthly plan at £30 and £35 with comparable visitor groups. Conversion falls from 10% to 9%, while revenue per 1,000 visitors rises from £3,000 to £3,150. The result suggests modest sensitivity within that tested range, not at every price.
Common misunderstanding
It is related to, but broader than, price elasticity of demand. Sensitivity can be explored through interviews, switching behaviour and willingness-to-pay research, while elasticity is a numerical relationship between price and quantity demanded. Stated willingness to pay may differ from real purchases.
When to use it
Use it before changing prices, designing tiers or targeting a new segment. Combine interviews with controlled behavioural data and watch retention as well as initial conversion. Avoid manipulative pressure, hidden charges or discrimination based on protected traits, and check local consumer-pricing rules.
