Passive income

“Income that continues with limited ongoing work after the asset, system or investment producing it has been established.”

Why passive income matters to a first-time founder

The label can hide the time, capital and risk needed before income becomes low-maintenance. Founders should separate recurring revenue from personal passivity: a subscription business may bill automatically while still requiring product work, support, marketing and compliance.

Examples of passive income

A designer spends 200 hours creating a template library, then sells 80 licences a month at €25 through an automated storefront. The €2,000 monthly revenue needs occasional updates and customer support, so it is relatively passive rather than effortless.

Common misunderstanding

It does not mean guaranteed, tax-free or work-free income. Tax authorities may define passive income differently for losses, reliefs or company rules, and those definitions vary by jurisdiction. dividend, rent and royalties also carry distinct risks.

When to use it

Use it when comparing how much ongoing attention different income streams require. Model setup cost, maintenance, churn, taxes and concentration before relying on it. For tax treatment, use the statutory local definition rather than a marketing label.
