Outlay cost

“An actual cash payment made to acquire something, start an activity or carry out an investment.”

Why outlay cost matters to a first-time founder

Knowing the immediate cash outlay prevents a viable-looking project from exhausting runway before benefits arrive. It also separates money that must leave the bank now from non-cash accounting charges and from alternatives you give up by choosing the project.

Examples of outlay cost

A bakery spends ₦18 million on an oven, ₦1.2 million on delivery and ₦800,000 on installation. Its initial outlay cost is ₦20 million. Depreciation affects later accounts, but it does not change the cash paid to put the oven into service.

Common misunderstanding

It is not the same as total economic cost. An outlay records cash paid, while opportunity cost captures the benefit sacrificed by choosing one option over another. Financing charges and future maintenance may also sit outside the initial outlay.

When to use it

Use it when budgeting a purchase, comparing investments or building a cash-flow forecast. Include every payment needed to make the asset or project usable, then model later operating costs separately. Ignore it only when no cash payment is involved.
