Why the way you monetise matters to a first-time founder
A useful product does not automatically become a sustainable business. Founders need to identify who pays, what they value and how revenue supports delivery costs. Monetisation choices can also change user incentives, privacy expectations and the product experience.
Examples of ways to monetise
A scheduling app attracts 20,000 free users. The founder introduces a £12 monthly plan for teams needing shared calendars and audit logs, while keeping basic individual use free. Paid features produce recurring revenue without selling users’ personal data.
Common misunderstanding
It is not the same as making a profit. Advertising, subscriptions or transaction fees may generate revenue while acquisition, support and infrastructure still cost more. Nor should every audience be monetised if doing so damages trust or conflicts with prior promises.
When to use it
Use the concept when testing a business model, setting pricing or deciding which customer funds the service. Validate willingness to pay before building complex billing. Track revenue alongside margin, retention and customer impact so apparent growth does not hide weak economics.
US spelling: monetize.
