Mission statement

“A concise statement of whom a company serves, what it does for them, and the purpose guiding its work now.”

Why mission statement matters to a first-time founder

Without a clear mission, a young company tends to say yes to every customer, partner and feature request, and the product grows sideways. A short statement of whom you serve and what you do for them gives the team a test for decisions: does this help those people? It also helps candidates, investors and partners understand quickly what the company is for. A mission that cannot help you say no is a slogan, not a working tool.

Examples of mission statement

Edventures’ mission statement is: “Make entrepreneurship accessible.” It names the change the company works towards now. AI coaching, personalised guidance, and practical tools explain how Edventures pursues that mission. They do not need to be packed into the mission itself.

Common misunderstanding

People mix this up with a vision statement or a list of values. The mission is the job today. The vision is the future you want that job to lead to. Values are how you behave while you do the job.

When to use it

Write it when the product keeps growing sideways, or when a partner asks you to add a customer you do not actually want. If the sentence does not help you say no, it is not finished.
