Why market share matters to a first-time founder
Market share shows how much of the money already being spent in your market you are capturing, and how much is going to competitors. Without it, revenue growth can look healthy while rivals grow faster, or a small slice can hide plenty of room left to win. Investors also use it to judge whether you can become a meaningful player, so you need a clearly defined market and a credible source for its total size.
Examples of market share
Studios in your city spend ₹200 million a year on tools like yours. You take ₹4 million. Your revenue market share is 2%. That can be a strong start if the market is the one you meant. It can also be a vanity number if you drew the market so small that 2% sounds large.
Common misunderstanding
People mix this up with market penetration. Share counts sales. Penetration counts how far through the set of possible buyers the product has reached. You can have a tiny share of a large market and still have reached most of the niche you actually serve.
When to use it
Use it when you are deciding whether the market is big enough, and when an investor asks for the number. Define the market in one sentence first. A share of an undefined market is not a number you can defend.
