Why a loss leader strategy matters to a first-time founder
The cheap item creates a deliberate loss, so the economics work only if enough buyers add profitable purchases or return later. Founders must model the whole basket, customer acquisition cost and repeat behaviour. Some jurisdictions restrict loss-leading or below-cost selling.
Examples of loss leader strategies
A grocer sells coffee beans for ₹200 below their full cost. The average buyer also purchases filters and breakfast food producing ₹700 of contribution, leaving ₹500 before shared overhead. If shoppers buy only the beans, every visit destroys value instead.
Common misunderstanding
It is not the same as penetration pricing. Penetration pricing uses a low introductory price to gain adoption and may still cover costs; a loss leader is knowingly priced below cost to stimulate other sales. Neither guarantees future customer loyalty.
When to use it
Consider it only when basket data or a controlled test can show profitable follow-on behaviour. Set purchase limits, a budget and a stopping rule before launch. Check local competition and consumer law, and avoid baiting customers with stock that is not genuinely available.
