Logistics

“The planning and control of moving and storing goods, materials and related information through a supply chain.”

Why logistics matters to a first-time founder

Reliable logistics turns an order into an on-time delivery at a controlled cost. Poor choices create stockouts, damage, delays and unhappy customers even when the product is strong. Founders need visibility into lead times, capacity, customs, returns and dependence on key providers.

Examples of logistics

An online retailer stores products with a fulfilment partner. When a customer orders, the partner picks, packs and hands the parcel to a carrier. The founder tracks inventory accuracy, dispatch time, delivery failures and returns to understand the full logistics performance and cost.

Common misunderstanding

Logistics is not the whole supply chain. It focuses mainly on movement, storage and related flows, while supply-chain management also covers sourcing, supplier relationships, production and broader planning. Outsourcing fulfilment does not outsource accountability for customer promises or regulatory compliance.

When to use it

Use the term when designing how materials or products move from suppliers to customers and back through returns. Map each hand-off, owner, lead time, cost and failure point. Test peak demand and disruption, and confirm insurance, customs and service responsibilities in provider contracts.
