Inside sales

“A sales approach in which representatives find and close customers remotely by phone, video, email or online tools.”

Why inside sales matter to a first-time founder

Remote selling can reach more prospects at lower travel cost and makes activity easier to measure. It still needs a clear customer profile, useful conversations and responsible outreach. Scaling calls or emails before proving demand can damage the brand, waste leads and create privacy or marketing-law risks.

Examples of inside sales

A business-software representative holds 12 video demonstrations each week and closes three annual contracts averaging ₦4 million. The founder tracks qualified opportunities and conversion, not just call volume. Prospects who decline marketing are recorded correctly so the team does not contact them unlawfully or disrespectfully.

Common misunderstanding

It does not mean order-taking customer support or every sale made on a website. Inside sales usually involves a representative actively guiding a business buyer through discovery, evaluation and purchase. Field sales relies more on in-person meetings, although one team can combine both approaches for different deal stages.

When to use it

Use it when customers can evaluate the offer remotely and the expected deal value supports human sales time without requiring frequent travel. Start with founder-led calls to learn the process, then document qualification and hand-offs. Check consent, privacy and electronic-marketing rules before running outbound campaigns.
