Why home office expense matters to a first-time founder
Rent, utilities, internet and equipment may support business activity, but that does not make every household cost deductible or reimbursable. Mixing personal and company spending creates weak records and possible tax problems. Clear allocation helps founders claim only permitted amounts and understand the company’s real operating costs.
Examples of home office expense
A sole trader uses one room exclusively for work and calculates an allowable share of electricity and broadband under local rules. A limited-company director instead claims the jurisdiction’s approved home-working amount. Neither charges the business for the family’s entire rent without evidence or a valid legal basis.
Common misunderstanding
Working from home does not automatically turn rent, mortgage payments or renovations into business deductions. Eligibility, calculation methods and consequences for the home differ by country and business form. An expense can also be valid for internal accounts without receiving the same treatment on a tax return.
When to use it
Track home-working costs when they are material and permitted by company policy or tax rules. Keep bills, dates, workspace calculations and the business purpose, then apply the official method consistently. Ask an accountant before claiming property costs or arrangements between a director and their company.
