Why hire purchase agreement matters to a first-time founder
Hire purchase can spread the cost of vehicles or equipment without requiring the full price upfront. The business usually does not own the asset during the payment period, and missed instalments may lead to repossession. Interest, fees, tax and early-settlement terms change the true cost.
Examples of hire purchase agreement
A bakery obtains a £24,000 oven, pays a £4,000 deposit and makes 36 monthly payments of £650 before a final purchase fee. The cash outflow totals more than the cash price. The founder compares that total, ownership timing and repossession risk with a bank loan and lease.
Common misunderstanding
It is not an ordinary purchase paid late, and it is not always the same as leasing. Ownership normally remains with the finance provider until stated conditions are met. Consumer-credit protections may not cover a company in the same way as an individual, and local rules differ.
When to use it
Consider it when a productive asset is needed now and predictable instalments fit the cash forecast. Compare total payable, deposit, maintenance, insurance, tax treatment and exit costs across finance options. Read the default and ownership clauses carefully and obtain advice for material or regulated agreements.
