Why guarantor matters to a first-time founder
Lenders and landlords may ask founders to guarantee company obligations, especially when the business has little trading history. That can put the founder’s personal assets at risk and weaken limited-liability protection in practice, so the wording and financial exposure deserve careful review.
Examples of guarantor
A bank lends €100,000 to a company after its founder signs a personal guarantee capped at €40,000 plus defined enforcement costs. If the company defaults, the bank may pursue the founder within the contract’s terms and applicable law.
Common misunderstanding
A guarantor is not automatically a co-borrower, and every guarantee is not unlimited. Liability depends on wording, caps, duration, amendments and local law. Leaving the company may not release the signer unless the creditor agrees formally.
When to use it
Use the term when someone gives a legally enforceable promise supporting another party’s obligation. Read the full guarantee, negotiate limits and release conditions, and obtain independent legal advice before signing. Never conceal the likelihood of default from a proposed guarantor.
