Gross receipts

“The total amounts received or accrued from business activity before specified costs, returns or allowances are deducted.”

Why gross receipts matter to a first-time founder

Tax authorities, grant programmes and contracts may use this measure to set filing duties, thresholds or fees. A founder needs the definition attached to that rule because it may include items beyond ordinary sales and may follow cash or accrual accounting.

Examples of gross receipts

A studio invoices ₹12 million for services and receives ₹500,000 of other business income. A local tax form includes both in gross receipts before permitted adjustments. The founder follows the form’s rules rather than deducting rent and salaries first.

Common misunderstanding

It is not always cash collected, revenue under financial-reporting standards or taxable profit. Some definitions include taxes collected, interest or asset sales, while others exclude them. The relevant statute, programme or contract determines what belongs in the figure.

When to use it

Use the term when a specific rule or report asks for it, and cite the applicable definition and period. Reconcile the amount to invoices and bank or ledger records. Obtain local tax advice instead of assuming ordinary revenue is an exact substitute.
