Free zone company

“A company licensed inside a free zone, an area with its own tax, customs and ownership rules, usually barred from selling directly into the local market. The UAE, for example, has dozens of free zones, each run by its own authority.”

Why free zone company matters to a first-time founder

The zone you pick decides which activities you may run, what the licence costs, whether you need an office and how many visas you can get. A free zone licence rarely lets you sell freely in the rest of the country, and lower tax is never automatic. Check that the zone fits your activity and customers before paying setup fees.

Examples of free zone company

A software founder registers a company in a Dubai free zone to sell subscriptions abroad and sponsors visas for two employees. Before signing a client elsewhere in the UAE, the company checks whether its licence allows the sale, how it must be structured and whether corporate tax or VAT applies.

Common misunderstanding

A free zone company is not automatically an offshore company or a tax-free business. It is a local legal entity licensed by the zone’s own authority. Ownership, tax treatment, customs access and trading outside the zone depend on the entity type, its activities and the country’s current rules.

When to use it

Consider one when your customers are mostly abroad or inside the zone, and the zone suits your activity and hiring plans. Compare total licence, visa, office, banking and compliance costs with a mainland company. Get local legal and tax advice before you register.
