Why fee matters to a first-time founder
Fees shape revenue, customer trust and the real cost of suppliers or finance. A small percentage can become material at scale, while hidden or confusing charges can breach consumer rules and damage retention. Founders should model fixed, percentage and recurring fees rather than compare headline prices alone.
Examples of fee
A payments provider charges a startup 1.4% plus €0.20 for each card transaction. On 10,000 monthly sales averaging €25, the fee is €5,500 before any chargeback or currency charges. The startup includes that cost in its unit economics and displays its own customer fees clearly.
Common misunderstanding
A fee is not automatically a tax, fine, commission or reimbursed expense. The name does not determine its legal or accounting treatment, and a compulsory charge may need to be included in an advertised total price. Refundability, tax treatment and disclosure requirements depend on the contract and jurisdiction.
When to use it
Define fees before signing a supplier, lender or customer agreement. State the amount or calculation, timing, tax, renewal, refund and cancellation terms in plain language. Test how percentage fees behave as volume changes, and obtain advice where regulated pricing, consumer disclosure or financial services rules may apply.
