Why direct tax matters to a first-time founder
Direct taxes affect how much profit or income founders and their companies retain, when cash must be reserved and which filings are required. Rates, deductions and payment schedules vary by jurisdiction and entity type. Ignoring them can create penalties, interest and a sudden cash shortfall.
Examples of direct tax
A company earns $100,000 of taxable profit in a country charging 20% corporation tax. It records a $20,000 tax liability and pays the tax authority under local deadlines. The business bears that charge itself, unlike sales tax collected from customers and remitted to the authority.
Common misunderstanding
Direct does not merely mean the taxpayer sends money to the government personally. The distinction concerns who is legally and economically meant to bear the tax. Payroll withholding may be remitted by an employer even though the underlying income tax belongs to the employee.
When to use it
Use the term when forecasting taxes on income, profit, property or wealth, and separate them from taxes collected through transactions. Confirm the taxpayer, tax base, rate, reliefs and deadlines in each jurisdiction. A qualified tax adviser should review material or cross-border positions.
