Why differentiation matters to a first-time founder
Without a meaningful reason to choose you, buyers compare mainly on price, convenience or familiarity. Useful differentiation can improve conversion, loyalty and margins. Cosmetic novelty does not help if customers do not value it, understand it or believe the company can deliver it consistently.
Examples of differentiation
Three payroll tools serve small restaurants. One guarantees setup in 24 hours, handles sector-specific shift rules and provides weekend support for €30 more per month. Interviews and paid trials show restaurant owners value fewer payroll errors enough to pay the premium, making those differences commercially useful.
Common misunderstanding
Differentiation is not simply being different or adding more features. A distinction matters only when a chosen customer values it and competitors cannot easily neutralise it. Positioning is how the offer is framed in the customer’s mind; differentiation is the underlying reason that framing can be credible.
When to use it
Use it when selecting a target market, shaping the product, setting prices or writing sales messages. Identify the alternative customers use today, test which difference changes purchasing behaviour and support the claim with evidence. Ignore distinctions that increase complexity without improving preference, outcomes or willingness to pay.
