Design partner

β€œAn early customer who works closely with a startup to shape the product, often in exchange for influence and a favourable price.”

Why design partner matters to a first-time founder

Early on, your own guesses and polite interviews cannot tell you which features matter. A few design partners using the product on real work show you what breaks, what they would pay for and what they ignore. Skip them and you risk polishing a product nobody relies on; pick the wrong ones and you build custom software for a single loud customer. Good design partners also become your first references and case studies.

Examples of design partner

A studio manager uses the chase tool on live invoices every week, joins a half-hour call each Friday, and pays half the future price for six months. Their complaints become the next build. A friend who says the idea is cool, and never sends an invoice through it, is not a design partner.

Common misunderstanding

People collect logos and call them partners, or they let one loud partner redesign the product away from everyone else. A design partner pays, uses, and talks. One of them is a teacher. Five who want five different products is a meeting you cannot win.

When to use it

Take one when you need depth from a real workflow and you can still say no to a request that only helps them. Write the time limit. A discount that never ends is just a cheap customer with extra meetings.
