Deposit

“Money placed with a financial institution or paid in advance to secure a purchase, service or obligation.”

Why deposit matters to a first-time founder

The word can describe very different arrangements, each with different ownership, refund and protection rules. A bank deposit affects liquidity and counterparty exposure; a supplier or property deposit may be refundable only under stated conditions. Misclassifying it can distort cash forecasts or cause disputes.

Examples of deposit

A company pays a ₦6 million deposit to reserve a venue costing ₦24 million. The contract says ₦3 million is refundable until 60 days before the event and none afterwards. The founder records the payment separately from the final expense and tracks the cancellation deadline in the cash forecast.

Common misunderstanding

A deposit is not always a down payment or an expense. It may be security returned after obligations are met, part-payment credited to the purchase price or money held by a bank. The agreement and local law determine who owns it, when it is refundable and how it is recorded.

When to use it

Clarify the type before paying or accepting one. Put the amount, purpose, holder, refund conditions, deadlines and treatment after cancellation or default in writing. For material sums, check whether funds should be held in escrow and whether any statutory deposit protection applies in the relevant jurisdiction.
