Customer segment

“A distinct group of potential customers who share a need, situation, or buying behaviour relevant to your offer.”

Why customer segment matters to a first-time founder

Without clear customer segments, you write one blurred offer that converts nobody particularly well. Groups with different needs respond to different prices, messages and features, and you reach them through different channels. Naming the segment lets you choose which group to serve first, what to build for them and where to find them, instead of spreading a small budget across people who want different things.

Examples of customer segment

Among people chasing late invoices, one group is the freelance designer who will pay a small monthly fee to stop doing it themselves. Another is the agency finance lead who needs the chase to match the accounting software they already use. Same problem, two customer segments, two offers.

Common misunderstanding

People say “customer segment” when they mean the whole target market. A customer segment is one market segment, a group you can describe. The target is the group you are going after. Listing several segments is not the same as choosing one.

When to use it

Name a customer segment when one price, message, or feature is clearly wrong for part of the audience. If everyone in front of you wants the same outcome, you do not need a finer split this month.
