Why banner advertising matters to a first-time founder
Banner advertising can put your product in front of a defined online audience, but impressions, meaning times the advert is shown, do not guarantee attention or sales. Founders need to compare the campaign’s full cost with meaningful outcomes such as qualified visits, trials and purchases, while protecting brand safety and user privacy.
Examples of banner advertising
A Kenyan bookkeeping app spends KSh 90,000 on banners across small-business websites. The adverts receive 600,000 impressions, 1,800 clicks and 45 trials. The click-through rate is 0.3%, but the team judges the campaign by the cost per trial and how many trial users become paying customers.
Common misunderstanding
A click is not automatically a customer, and a high click-through rate does not prove profit. Banner campaigns can also receive accidental or fraudulent clicks. Unlike a search advert responding to stated intent, a banner often interrupts someone browsing, so targeting, placement, creative quality and measurement all affect results.
When to use it
Use banner advertising when you have a specific audience, a clear offer, reliable conversion tracking and a controlled test budget. Define success before launch, use truthful creative, disclose advertising where required and avoid manipulative designs. Pause placements that generate suspicious traffic, poor-quality leads or unacceptable brand associations.
