Why bank deposits matter to a first-time founder
Deposits are usually the base for paying suppliers, receiving revenue and holding reserves. Access, interest, currency and statutory protection vary by account and country. Large cash balances can create concentration risk if one bank fails or freezes access, even when the company itself remains healthy.
Examples of bank deposits
A French company transfers €120,000 into a business account. Its records show €120,000 as a bank asset because the bank owes it that amount. The bank generally records the same deposit as a liability to the customer, while using funds within regulatory and liquidity constraints.
Common misunderstanding
A deposit is not a labelled pile of notes held separately for you. It is generally a claim on the bank. “Deposit” can also describe a refundable payment to a landlord or supplier, but bank deposits specifically concern money credited to an account at a bank.
When to use it
Use deposit information when planning cash reserves, choosing account types or spreading material balances across institutions. Check withdrawal terms, fees, currency exposure and the legal deposit-protection limit. Do not chase a slightly higher interest rate without assessing access and bank risk.
