Why average selling price (ASP) matters to a first-time founder
Average selling price shows what customers actually pay after discounts, plan mix and promotions, rather than what appears on your price list. Tracking it helps you spot discounting, changes in customer mix and whether revenue growth comes from selling more units or charging more per unit.
Examples of average selling price (ASP)
A Kenyan software company sells 60 monthly subscriptions at KSh 4,000 and 40 at KSh 7,000. Revenue is KSh 520,000 across 100 subscriptions. Divide KSh 520,000 by 100: the average selling price is KSh 5,200 for that month.
Common misunderstanding
It is not the listed price, the most common price or the profit per sale. Average selling price uses actual revenue divided by units sold. Define a unit consistently: one licence, one order and one customer can produce very different results for the same business.
When to use it
Use it in monthly pricing reviews, revenue forecasts and sales-channel comparisons. Break it down by product, region or customer segment when the overall figure hides important differences. If your offering is highly customised, compare similar packages rather than forcing unlike projects into one average.
