Why average outstanding balance matters to a first-time founder
This figure affects how much interest you pay on borrowing and shows how heavily you rely on credit during a period. A rising average can warn that cash is tight, even if the balance happens to be low on the final day shown on your statement.
Examples of average outstanding balance
A company’s loan balance is ₹2 million for 10 days and ₹1.4 million for the next 20 days. Multiply each balance by the days it applied, add the results, then divide by 30: (₹20 million + ₹28 million) ÷ 30 = an average outstanding balance of ₹1.6 million.
Common misunderstanding
It is not simply the amount due on the statement date. The average reflects balances across the whole billing or measurement period, so a last-minute repayment may reduce the closing balance without reducing the average by much. Lenders may also use different daily or monthly calculation rules.
When to use it
Use it when checking borrowing costs, comparing loan offers or planning repayments. Ask the lender exactly how it calculates the average before modelling interest. If your business has no revolving credit or changing loan balance, the closing balance may be enough for routine cash planning.
