Why auditor matters to a first-time founder
An external auditor provides independent confidence rather than preparing or taking responsibility for management’s numbers. For founders, the auditor can strengthen confidence in financial statements and identify weaknesses in the company’s checks and safeguards. Independence rules limit the decisions and bookkeeping work the auditor can perform for the client.
Examples of auditor
A Swedish company appoints a registered auditor who plans the audit required by law, requests evidence, tests selected balances and reports to the shareholders. Management prepares the accounts and answers questions. The auditor evaluates the evidence independently under Swedish requirements and applicable professional standards.
Common misunderstanding
An auditor does not check every transaction or guarantee that statements are error-free. External auditors, a company’s own internal auditors and government auditors have different roles. Qualification, appointment, independence and reporting duties vary by jurisdiction, and the company’s accountant is not automatically permitted to act as its auditor.
When to use it
Engage an auditor when required by law, requested by investors or lenders, or when independent assurance is otherwise valuable. Confirm professional registration, industry experience, independence, scope, timetable and fees. Start before year end so evidence and accounting issues can be addressed on time.
