App store optimisation (ASO)

“The work of improving an app's store listing, from its name and keywords to screenshots and ratings, so it ranks higher and gets more downloads. ASO covers both being found in App Store and Google Play search and persuading people to install once they land on the page.”

Why app store optimisation (ASO) matters to a first-time founder

Many people find apps by searching inside the App Store or Google Play rather than visiting a website. If your listing uses words nobody searches for, or your screenshots fail to show the value in seconds, paid ads become your only reliable source of installs and your cost per user stays high. A stronger listing also lifts the return on every ad you run, because more of the people who tap through go on to install.

Examples of app store optimisation (ASO)

A budgeting app gets 20,000 store page views a month and 1,000 installs, a 5% conversion rate. The founder rewrites the subtitle around ‘split bills’, a phrase people actually search for, and replaces feature-list screenshots with three that show a bill being split in seconds. Page views rise to 26,000 and conversion to 6.5%, so monthly installs reach 1,690: a 69% increase with no extra ad spend.

Common misunderstanding

ASO in this sense has nothing to do with administrative services only, the employer health-plan arrangement that uses the same letters and has its own page. The more common confusion is with search engine optimisation. The ideas overlap, but app stores weigh different signals, such as recent install numbers, ratings and keyword fields you fill in directly, and a store page is judged on how many visitors install as much as on where it ranks.

When to use it

Work on it this month if you have a live mobile app and expect a meaningful share of users to find you through store search; a few hours on keywords and screenshots can pay back quickly. Leave it for now if your app is still in closed testing, if your product runs in the browser, or if users arrive mainly through a sales team or direct invitations rather than by searching.
